VT 170 Carl Rogers: The Essence of Client Centered Therapy (Order)

The name Carl Rogers has been prominent in the helping professions for over sixty years. Rogerian, client centered, non directive therapy began a movement away from and beyond the "medical model" of treatment and Freudian analytic therapy that had dominated therapy during the first half of the 20th Century. Rogers, more than any other person, is credited for introducing and exchanging the term "client" for that of "patient". The human potential movement traces its origins to his work.

Early in this video teaching tape Dr. Corrales uses a direct quote from Rogers as a major organizing hypothesis for his work.

" If certain conditions are present in the attitude of the therapist, namely genuineness, empathic understanding and positive regard, then positive personality changes will occur in the client."

Dr. Corrales elaborates each of these ingredients !) Genuineness, 2) Empathic understanding, and 3) Positive regard. As he looks at different theoretical approaches to treatment, different situational content in the treatment setting, different client constituencies in treatment. He returns again and again in a purposeful repetitive itemization and discussion of these three ingredients that are at once simple and profound in their impact on practice.
